I was quite amused earlier this week when I got an email from a reader telling me that I had “the worst personal finance blog in the world“. It’s encouraging to see such an incredibly hyperbolic statement being made, and I’m proud that I can engender such extreme feelings, be they good or bad. If I can inspire just one person to care enough to declare me the world’s worst anything, I think I’m doing a mighty fine job.
Frankly, I’m a little honoured that someone actually acknowledged MoneyGrubbingLawyer as a personal finance site. I generally get lumped in this category because my rants and roars tend to fall generally on the subject of money and its discontents. I lack the ideologically consistency necessary to be a political blogger, the openness and candor necessary to be a personal blogger, the geek cred necessary to be a tech blogger, and the lactating breasts necessary to be a mommy blogger, so I guess personal finance is the best round hole for this square peg. It’s a pretty full niche, but there’s also a ton of great sites out there, chock full o’ money wisdom, and I feel fortunate to be counted among them.
Most of the PF blogs you’ll find are American, but the general information provided tends to be of universal applicability. However, if you’re looking for a distinctly Canadian flavour to your personal finance there are some fantastic blogs that can teach you everything you need to know and keep you entertained at the same time. These 10 Canadian blogs are my favourite-they’re all informative, well written, and offer unique perspectives on Canadian personal finance. Check them out and add them to your list of daily reads- you’ll be better informed (and maybe even wealthier) for doing so.
- Million Dollar Journey - One young engineer’s journey to become a millionaire by age 35. This site is filled with some of the most understandable and thorough information on topics from investing to mortgages to online video rentals. If you’ve got a question about money, there’s a good chance that this site has an answer.
- Canadian Capitalist - Perhaps the best Canadian source for information on investing, markets, asset allocation, and just about anything else to do with turning some money into more money. Pay particular attention to his sleepy portfolio, which is serving as my model for my RRSP savings.
- Four Pillars - A great all-around personal finance blog that covers a range of topics. For excellent starter information on investing topics, check out the spin-off site ABCs of Investing; it’s not Canadian-specific, but filled with great articles.
- Squawkfox - Squawkfox describes her blog as “where personal finance is sexy”. It’s fun, practical information about managing your money and your life. She hasn’t updated lately, but hopefully we’ll see more in the future!
- Michael James on Money - Clear, concise information about investing. This is one of the hidden gems of the Canadian blogosphere.
- Canadian Dream: Free at 45 - If you thought Million Dollar Journey was ambitious, check out this blogger’s plan to retire at age 45. Lots of great information on retirement planning and managing your spending.
- Canadian Personal Finance Blog by Big Cajun Man - Interesting and concise articles on all aspects of personal finance, as well as great articles on recent developments and finance news.
- The Strump - Generally accountants scare me, but this CGA is an exception. His tagline says it all- “A (sometimes) irreverent and (hopefully) useful take on personal finance. Personal finance is fun”.
- The Financial Blogger - This Quebec-based blogger offers great advice on topics such as financial planning and strategic investing. He also just finished a great series asking “Is my financial planner playing me?”.
- Thicken My Wallet - This is a blog written by a “recovering lawyer” and entrepreneur. You can find great info on business topics, as well as general financial issues and employment topics. This is one of my “must read” blogs.
Honourable mentions:
- Fabulously Broke in the City - This blog is a wonderfully entertaining paradox- partially about smart money management and partially about outrageously expensive fashion-y things that I don’t even pretend to understand. It’s more personal than finance, but worth checking out for the rants alone.
- Loonies and Cents - This is a relatively new blog on the scene, but shows great promise. The writing is excellent and the articles thorough. Definitely a blog to watch.
Are there any good Canadian blogs I’ve missed?

Humph. I think we can clearly say that Four Pillars is “the worst personal finance blog in the world“ thank you very much! If I ever open a restaurant I plan to make some outrageous claim (like “best milkshakes in the universe!” or something like that).
Its bizarre some of the things people will go out of their way to blast you over. Mike got VERY COLOURFULLY told off one time for a post about how weekly mortgage payments don’t help as much as people think they do… To be fair, I still laugh every time I read it, so I’m happy the guy got worked up and wrote in.
Thanks for the mention - like Mr. Cheap I’m a bit perturbed that you have taken our “worst pf blog” world title but maybe a good ol’ virtual cage match should settle things?
Oh, come on now. I should be in the running for the worst. Have you seen some of my posts when I wrote them in a hurry. Just plain horrible.
Thanks for the mention,
Tim
Thanks for including me in your blog list. There are other Canadian personal finance blogs I like. If I had to choose just one, it would be WhereDoesAllMyMoneyGo. This blog often covers some more advanced topics in a clear and entertaining way.
I’ve always considered MGL a PF blog, but one that’s far more diverse and entertaining than most. As someone who’s still at the attmepting-to-grow-legs-and-climb-onto-the-beach stage of fincancial evolution (and I’m obviously in the minority here), I appreciate the fact that you don’t entirely concentrate on advanced topics- but the information (or opinions or whatever) that you provide about investing, RRSPs, etc. helps me think about planning for the future.
I like that you specified that you don’t have LACTATING breasts…
Honored to be on your list MGL! Getting negative feedback is an indication of your blog getting noticed. Congrats!

Apart from Preet, I’d include Canadian Financial DIY in my list.
http://canadianfinancialdiy.blogspot.com/
If you also count professional writers, the list would grow even longer. And, thanks for the mention!
Thanks for throwing me on the list as an honourable mention.
I don’t really consider my blog to be 100% PF.. It’s more 50% finance, 50% personal (rant, fashion, style, random tips)..
Think of me as the tri-love child of Oprah, Martha Stewart and Dave Ramsey. LOL!!!
For the record I have NEVER thought of your blog as a PF blog.
But it is a pretty big honour to be the worst one on the block…
Thank you so much for mentioning moi in your fine mix of Canuck writers. I missed blogging in February - I was writing a moneylicious book for Canadians!
I”ll be back to my regular squawky self shortly.
I think you should make “I’m the worst PF blog in the world” your tag line. Seriously. I would boast big time if I could be the best at being the worst in any endeavor.
Thanks for the honor. As I said on Twitter, you really have to stop letting your family members comment on your blog!
I also second Preet.
Awesome, this is great for what I been looking for.
I talk about personal finance and business but with a twist.
Either way, it is nice to see other Canadian bloggers especially on the same topic.
Thanks for the mention!
Sorry for the delayed response … I was on vacation then family stuff happened.
Thanks for the additional suggestions, especially those who pointed out my unforgivable omission of Preet. I had totally forgotten that he is Canadian! His is great blog, definitely worth checking out.
