Today is Election Day, which means several things. First, as of tomorrow morning, Canada will have a new government- or more accurately, the old government with a new mandate. Second, readers won’t have to put up with as many political posts from yours truly. And third, if you don’t vote and I find out, I’ll personally kick your disenfranchised ass. So get out there are vote. Or I’ll mess you up. Really.
On a less threatening note, here are a few election tidbits to satiate your election hunger:
- If you’re need information on where and how to vote (the physical act, not the actual election selection), go to Elections Canada’s Voter Information Service. If you need a ride to the polls, call any candidate’s office and they’ll be more than happy to arrange a ride for you. If you’re particularly Machiavellian about it, call the office of the candidate you won’t be voting for, as they will then be tying up some of their drivers ferrying you back and forth from the polls instead of getting out their own voters. If you ask nicely, they might even drop you back at the mall instead of taking you home. Yup, I’m that much of a bastard.
- If you’re still undecided on how to vote (the actual election selection, not when and where to mark your X), don’t bother trying to read the party platforms- they’re dull, saccharine, and filled with pictures of “diverse” families, old people, and polar bears (although not in the same picture). Instead, check out the Globe and Mail’s comparison of the platforms, complete with fancy pictures.
- A few weeks back, Pundit’s Guide had an excellent post about the perils of strategic voting. If you’re considering voting based on strategy rather than principle, read this first. You should also keep in mind the quote from John Quincy Adams posted up by Allison Wonder a few days back:
“Always vote for principal, though you may vote alone, and you shall enjoy the sweet reward that your vote was never wasted.”
- Thanks to antiquated election laws, publishing election results online before all polls across the country have closed is a serious offence. I’ll be watching closely to see which bloggers are brave enough to flout the laws and drag Canada into kicking and screaming into the digital age. I’ll give you a hint- it won’t be me. I’m too pretty to end up in prison. Be careful what you Twitter, folks- Elections Canada is watching.
Now get off the computer and go out and vote! Or I’ll mess you up. Really.

I liked that quote- even if I’m always throwing away my friggin’ vote…
That said, if a party had a picture on their website of a diverse family, old people AND polar bears (wild only) displayed, I’d almost definitely vote for them.
